Press Release June 27, 2008

Water pollution, the shortage of clean water resources and extreme phenomena caused by climate change, such as desertification, are global problems and affect us all. Finnish water technology companies are currently at the forefront of global competition. They offer highly developed water technology solutions for dealing with these major problem areas.

With the aim of promoting the internationalisation of Finnish water know-how, Lahti Science and Business Park Ltd and two networks coordinated by it, the Finnish Cleantech Cluster and IASP Enviroparks - an international network of environmentally-orientated science parks - collaborated with Technopolis Group Oulu, a member of the Finnish Cleantech Cluster, and the University of Pretoria Water Institute, to arrange a high-level Global Water Event on water technology in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 17 September 2008. A total of 50 experts from 15 different countries throughout the world took part in the Event. The Event was arranged in connection with the World Congress of IASP, the International Association of Science Parks.

At the Global Water Event, science parks interested in the water business were able to share their know-how and experiences and increase their collaboration. The keynote speaker at the Event was Professor Gideon Oron from Ben-Gurion University in Israel. Professor Oron, who represents the very forefront of applied research into water technology and is currently working at Yale University in the US, delivered a broad presentation on the global problem of clean water resources and the potential solutions offered by advanced water technology. Other speakers at the Event included Eugene Cloete, Director of the University of Pretoria Water Institute and Eero Huttunen, Director of CEWIC, the Centre of Expertise in the Water Industry Cluster.
