The Lahti region is among the most industrialised regions in Finland. It has developed from a traditional industrial cluster into an innovative and international business environment with specialist know-how and good market contacts.

Focus on Cleantech  

The nation's second most significant concentration of environmental business has developed in the Lahti region. Approximately 10 % of Finland's environment related trade is based in the region. The annual growth of environmental business in the Lahti region has been around 15 % in the 2000s. The environmental business is a strong and customer oriented sector with good prospects for growth.

The Region offers a first class working environment for cleantech business. The concentration of cleantech expertise consists of some 120 companies, a five-university consortium and public development organisations. Cleantech sector is a common development effort in the region by public organisations, companies and research institutions. Lahti is also nationally spearheading the efforts to develop environmental technology in Finland.

Other Key Sectors of the Lahti Region

  • Mechatronics. Built around the local technology industry, mechatronics is the biggest industrial cluster in the Lahti area when measured in terms of number of companies, overall turnover, and number of employees.
  • Woodworking and housing. The region is the biggest producer of wood products in Finland and a centre of furniture manufacturing and logistics. In addition, the region is home to internationally recognised manufacturers of woodworking machinery. The housing sector focuses on the development of environmentally and energy efficient solutions for housing. There are around 2 900 woodworking and housing companies in the region that employ around 17 000 persons.
  • Grain. The region is home to the most remarkable and varied centre of grain expertise in Finland. The cluster is investing strongly in research and development activities.  
  • Welfare business. The Päijät-Häme wellbeing cluster forms a network consisting of public, private and third sector parties as well as R&D to create a new form of cooperation. The cluster creates new product and service concepts and business as well as operations models that improve quality, availability and economy of services.
